This decision has been in the offing for several weeks, with Puel hinting at it in recent interviews.
Barnes has been one of the most impressive players in the Championship this season, with eight goals and six assists in the league for West Brom.
Puel has now brought him back to use in the Premier League, to bolster his attacking options for the second half of the campaign.
Barnes will now compete with the likes of Rachid Ghezzal, Marc Albrighton and Demarai Gray for a starting spot at Leicester.
