Leicester City have been linked with a move for Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos, but the Scottish club’s manager Steven Gerrard remains keen to keep hold of his star man.
The Foxes are said to be in the hunt for the attacker’s signature ahead of the summer transfer window but could be forced to pay at least £20 million to secure his services, according to recent claims from Rangers’ managing director Stewart Robertson.
Morelos has been in scintillating form for his side this season. He has found the net on 28 occasions in all competitions, with 16 of these coming in the Scottish Premiership.
The 22-year-old has struggled with discipline throughout the campaign, though, and has been sent off four times already this term, with three dismissals in the top flight and one in his side’s Europa League qualifying campaign.
Morelos is vital to Gerrard’s plans, and the former Liverpool midfielder reaffirmed his stance on the player’s future when quizzed about the recent speculation.
As quoted by Leicestershire Live, the Rangers manager said:
I’ve been clear on my thoughts about Alfredo. We want him to stay here for as long as possible.
But I understand how people work and the reality is we haven’t had any offers at the moment. He’s a Rangers player.
Why Morelos could be a good signing for Leicester this summer
Instincts in the box
Morelos’ arguably greatest trait is his ability to be in the right place at the right time. He makes intelligent runs, is a nuisance for defenders and has excellent instincts in the area.
Morelos is still very much a youngster. He’s gained valuable experience while leading the line for Rangers but is still 22-years-old. He’s set for a big future, and Leicester could look to secure him for his best years.
Competition for places
Jamie Vardy is 32-years-old but is still clearly Leicester’s best striker, with Kelechi Iheanacho still underwhelming. A new forward is required to push the ex-England international next season, and Morelos would be a shrewd addition.
Rodgers' knowledge of Scottish football
Brendan Rodgers will know all about Morelos. The forward regularly played against his Celtic side and displayed his qualities. It’d come as no surprise to see the new Foxes boss pursue the chance to work with the Rangers star.
